Illuminating the Spirit of the New Year
Each year, the Imperial Palace in Japan hosts Utakai Hajime — the New Year’s Poetry Gathering — where poems are composed on a single theme chosen by the Emperor, known as the chokudai.
This cherished tradition, with origins in the Manyoshu of the 8th century, celebrates language, reflection, and renewal through poetry.
For 2026, the Imperial Poetry Theme is “明 (MEI)”, a word evoking light, clarity, and renewal.
It reminds us of the gentle radiance that dispels shadow — a brightness born of understanding and hope.
The flavor of Matcha “MEI” unfolds with a deep, rounded umami that glides softly across the palate, leaving a silken texture and a finish of gentle clarity.
Its aroma is subtle yet dignified — an elegant fragrance reminiscent of early morning light filtering through a veil of mist.
The tea’s color, a vivid emerald green, evokes the freshness of leaves, embodying both purity and quiet vitality.
